Public Works Department

The Public Works Department has two administrative assistants, a Village Engineer and Public Works Director on staff to provide support for resident concerns and inquiries. The functions undertaken by the Administration Division include:

  • Review of all new subdivisions, building developments, site improvements permits and utility permits.
  • Preparation of many of the Village's Capital Improvement programs including water main replacement, street rehabilitation, sanitary sewer replacement, and storm sewer projects.
  • Provide engineering inspection for the construction of all public facilities in new subdivisions to ensure compliance with Village Codes.
  • Manage the Village's floodplain and floodway program.

The Public Works Department has a registered Professional Engineer on staff to provide engineering expertise and knowledge without the need to hire outside consultants. The functions undertaken by the Engineering Division include the review of all new subdivision and site development plans, preparation of many of the Village's Capital Improvement programs including water main replacement, street rehabilitation, sanitary sewer replacement, and storm sewer projects, and inspections of all public facilities in new subdivisions to ensure compliance with Village Codes. The Engineering Division also oversees the Village’s floodplain management program.

The Engineering Division maintains a list of known benchmarks within the Village limits. Click here for an interactive Benchmarks Map.

Site Improvements

  • Contact the Engineering Department at 847-913-2366 before starting any grading work that could affect drainage or is beneath the drip line of a tree in order to determine if a site work permit is required.

A Site Work Permit is required when doing asphalt overlay of your existing driveway or removal and replacement with asphalt, concrete or pavers. A permit is also required when performing any repairs to a sanitary sewer or water line. A permit is not required for seal-coating residential driveways, however commercial property seal coating for parking lots does require a permit. Applications are available on the Village’s website and in some cases, permits may be applied for and received electronically.

Please contact Village Engineer, Wally Dittrich via email or at 847-913-2366 with additional Engineering related questions.
